It can be so frustrating when you know you’re here to shine your light – and you feel so close to being there – but something keeps holding you back…
…You’re ready to leave your job and go live your purpose, but then the security lures you so you stay on…
…You want to put yourself out there and be more social, but instead you grab a bag of chips, make for the couch and binge watch the next Netflix series.
…You’re finally sitting down for some real self care, but as soon as you get still, your mind races with all the things you urgently need to do NOW, so within minutes you’re back in your endless to-do list…
…You’re about to embark on your path of freedom from food (or any addiction), but all of a sudden your work commitments 10x, you get a health scare, your body gets strangely exhausted and so you just figure you’ll wait until things slow down…
What gives?
It’s easy to interpret these sabotage patterns as signs that you’re never gonna “get there.”
Or that something about you is just different and lacking.
Or that things will never change.
But what if the exact opposite is true?
What if your sabotage pattern is actually a sign that you’re on the brink of a breakthrough!!!
Here’s what’s true.
As much as we want to believe that our biggest breakthroughs happen when we are at the top of our game, checking off all the boxes, doing things perfectly and feeling great, the real fact is that breakthroughs happen when you’re deep in your “stuff.”
It’s messy. It’s uncomfortable. And it can have you feeling lost, angry, confused and misunderstood.
That’s what makes it a breakthrough.
Because you are so “in it” that you literally need something to “break” “through” the delusions that you’re living in so you can catapult into a new level of awareness, clarity and direction.
If you suspect you might be in that place now, in your “stuff” and feeling lost, angry, confused or misunderstood, here’s what you want to do:
- Acknowledge it. Recognize what you being in “your stuff” looks like. For each one of us it’s slightly different, and yet there are some common patterns. - Reframe it. After you recognize that you’re in a resistance pattern, it’s time to see it for what it truly is. Not a sign that you’re never gonna get this. But rather a sign that you’re ready for a massive change!!!! You’re right there! You’re just a distinction or two away from your next big breakthrough. This is the time to reach out, ask for help and get support in moving beyond your block. The sabotage shows up because there is just one small part of you still clutching to your current reality, wanting to feel safe. If you can love this part and drop your judgment you’ll come to realize that your sabotage is simply a signpost that you’re stepping into something way bigger – and this is amazing!!
- Act in spite of it. This step is perhaps the most confronting and challenging. We can acknowledge our resistance and reframe it all we want, but the real breakthrough happens when we take bold aligned action in spite of it! Taking bold aligned action in spite of your resistance means dancing with discomfort and finding your new footing. It’s not caving into the convenient quick fix in the moment, and instead, staying steadfast to the deeper, more authentic desire in your heart. This step takes a new kind of stamina, a “spiritual stamina,” as my mentor Carolyn Myss would call it. And in my experience, it is a skill we can all acquire so that it becomes our new default.
Last weekend I got to witness every woman at the Freedom Embodied Academy Retreat applying this kind of “spiritual stamina,” as she launched beyond her blocks, breaking through to new levels of freedom, connection, authenticity and sense of belonging.
